My Fitness Routine

Since July I have been (trying) to exercise more and have got into going to the gym. Before starting I had no idea what to do and kind of just learnt as I went along.  I am still new to the whole working out thing but am really loving the little routine I have got myself into. Don’t get me wrong, I have weeks where I barely manage to leave my house let alone make it to the gym but I try to go at least 3-4 times a week. If I’m not feeling going to the gym, I do some form of HIIT workout from YouTube or bodyweight exercises at home using the exercises I have listed below. I am in no way a fitness expert, this is just what works for me.

I try to do some form of cardio every time I go to the gym. If I haven’t got a whole lot of energy I will just go on the cross trainer for around 10 minutes and then walk on an incline on the treadmill for 15-20 minutes depending how I feel.

On days that I really want to hit the cardio hard I will start with 10 minutes on the cross trainer to warm myself up. I will then go on  the treadmill and start with an incline walk for 2 minutes then sprint for 1 minute. I keep alternating between these two for 20 minutes and aim to burn around 200-250 calories. If I start feeling tired I will just walk for an extra minute or I will turn the incline down. Usually for the last 1-2 minutes I will sprint faster or will run continuously without stopping to walk. I like to really push myself in the last couple of minutes so I really feel like I’ve achieved something from my work out. Once 20 minutes is up I do a 5 minute cool down to allow my body to recover before moving on to weights.

Weight Training

When it comes to weights I train different areas of my body on different days. I am not strict on what days I train what because I just go with whatever I feel like doing. I will however try to include at least one arm, leg, bum and ab workout each week. I will now give you an idea of the kind of exercises I do for each area. Before I start any weight training I do some simple stretches to warm up my muscles in that area.

30 x Kettlebell Russian Twist

30 x Side Crunch per side

30 x Abdominal Crunch

30 x Bicycle Crunch

30 x Toe Touches

I sometimes like to use a stability ball as it is more challenging and works other areas of the body, not just the abs. For this I like to go onto Pinterest for some workout inspiration. The following are my favourite moves:

3×12 Plank Toe Taps

3×12 Tummy Tucks

3×12 Pike

3×12 Crunch

3×12 Oblique Crunch per side

For my arms I mainly stick to using dumbbells and body weight. I literally just type in arm workout on Pinterest and pick one. The following are amongst my favourites:

3×15 Tricep Kickbacks

3×15  Bicep Curls

3×15 Push Press

3×15 Hammer Curls

3×12 Lateral Raises

3×12 Bent Over Lateral Raise

3×12 Front Raise

3×12 Shoulder Press

3×15 Push Ups

2×30 Second Plank

For my bum I use Tammy Hembrow’s 8 Week Booty guide. I don’t strictly follow it I just do the moves I can do with the equipment available at my gym then add my own moves in. These are some of my favourites:

3×12 Barbell Squat (10kg)

3×12 per leg Split Squat holding Dumbbells

3×12 Wide Stance Leg Press

3×12 Barbell Hip Thrust

3×12 Deadlift

3×12 Kettlebell Squat Swing

For legs I mainly use the leg machines at my gym. My favourites to use are the leg press and hip abduction machines. Alongside these I use a mixture of both body weight and weighted moves. The following are my favourites:

3×12 Split Squat

3×12 Kettlebell Swing Squat

3×15 Dumbbell Sumo Squat

3×12 Barbell Squat

2x3o Second Wall Sit

3×20 Glute Bridges

3×15 each leg Forward Lunge

After I have worked out I like to do some simple stretches to cool down and prevent injury.

So that is it for my gym routine. As I said I am not a fitness professional and was a complete newbie to the whole exercise malarkey but really am enjoying learning all there is to know. So if you’re a gym phob like I was, my advice would be to just go for it. You learn along the way by watching others and simply just doing it. I know gyms can be such daunting places especially if it feels like everyone knows what they’re doing and you’re stood completely baffled. Just remember that everyone started somewhere. Jump onto Pinterest or Youtube and get inspired.

What is your workout routine?

With Love,

Beth x
